The Saga of the Double Points (Yarn Along)

Double pointed needles have a way of disappearing in my home.  That is my explanation for why the sweater I knit this summer for a friend's new baby sat without sleeves for months.  I intended, each week, to swing by the fabric+craft store after my grocery trip, but life has a way of getting in the way.  The girls started gymnastics on Saturday mornings, requiring me to book it to get home in time to get them ready.  Last week my oldest asked to come with me on my trip so he could make a much anticipated purchase at the nearby Target.  Each time, I planned on stopping in for double point needles. Each time, it just didn't happen.  Sure, I could stop by on Tuesdays, after co op when I normally have our car, but 6 kids in a fabric store after a morning of classes?  Well...call me crazy, but that doesn't sound like a great time to peruse knitting supplies.

All this to say, it took ordering some yarn for a custom from knitpicks.com for me to finally pick up the required needles.  I went with the Sunstruck line, and really love the way that they feel.  Once they arrived, the sleeves knit up in an evening.  Instead of the gradual decreases that the pattern suggests, I opted for a quick decrease around the wrists to make the sleeves a bit more billowy and feminine.

Now I just need to go out for buttons.  If baby Frances is ever going to wear it, hopefully it won't be months again before I get a chance!

Pattern notes: the yarn is Knitpicks Stroll Tonal in Harvest.  The pattern is Sunnyside.

  3. I wonder where those pesky needles are hiding? I just bought one set of wooden needles (clover) and love how my hands do not hurt as much as metal needles do. Love your sweater it's beautiful!

  6. I'm not sure. With how many I have lost, you would think the house would be littered with them! Maybe hiding out with all of the girls' hair clips?

  7. What a great little pattern. I looked it up on Raverly to see why I haven't come across it before in my search for top down seamless baby sweaters--fingering weight yarn, that's it. I try to avoid projects with such tiny needles. Have you tried it with a heavier yarn? It sure is beautiful and kudos to you for knitting something to give away. I have a hard time letting my hand knits leave our house.

  9. Yes, Sarah, I am the same. For years I avoided anything on less than worsted. I was surprised at how quickly this knit up. The weight is fine, but the needles (it calls for fours, I used 5s) aren't. It is very light weight, perfect for over dresses.

  12. I am knitting a Sunnyside sweater in Stroll tonal as well ... and it too has sat for ages without sleeves! In my case it was the yarn I lost, not the needles. :)

I love how yours turned out! So sweet and what a lovely color. :)
