A Prayer for Steamy Days

The "real feel" is 99 degrees with 80% humidity and our one little air conditioning unit feels like it's blowing hot air.  The baby can't nap, his curls soaked in perspiration while he pads along behind me, wailing.

My oldest is writing sentences, the heat pushing each of us to the limit of patience and beyond, resulting in less than satisfactory behavior.  And I'm looking in the fridge for dinner, wondering what, exactly, I can make for dinner that will cool us all down.  Dinah informs me we are out of popsicles and I can see the tears right below the surface.

When the mercury rises and tempers flare right along with it, the only place to look is up.  For every little thing that goes off track on a day like today threatens to take me right down with it.  Jonah spills half his cereal on the floor, and the thought of mopping makes me want to burst into tears.  I know I amount to more than mere biology, so I pray for peace like rivers to cool off tempers and calm the sticky baby in my lap.

We wake again to heat and I'm trying to remember that people live every day this way and I can't just throw it all away when steamy days find me.  Nose to the grindstone, baby on my back, I rally as best I can - and keep those steady prayers streaming straight up to God.

For today -

Remind me to smile and sing and laugh.  Remind me to hug and hold and help. Remind me my job description doesn't change with the weather.  Remind me You are working right beside me.  Remind me to stock up on popsicles.  Remind me to do laundry at night.  Remind me today only comes once.

Remind me that this is the day that You have made...and remind me to rejoice in it.

  1. My parents live in your neck of the woods, and when I called my mom last night, all she could say was "IT'S SO HOT" in this lethargic, AC-just-broke voice. Sending prayers and cool thoughts your way today...

  2. Oh I am with you. It just got hot this week after an abnormally cool spring and early summer. Right now I am trying to get everyone to sleep because they need it after playing outside this morning...so far the only two sleeping are the new baby and the 2 yr old. I'm dripping with sweat despite the AC and the older two (5 and 4) are restlessly squirming in bed instead of going to sleep. Patience please!...K

  3. I love your blog for so many reasons.
One of me favorite easy dinners that might cool you off is green smoothies and pop corn.

  4. Laughing at the prayer for doing laundry at night... Lately it seems like I just can't get the laundry done so I was thinking about doing a laundry night just to catch up. Love how God weaves His threads into all of His people!

  6. A favourite warm weather dinner is the Nourishing Gourmet's Bacon, Egg, and Avocado salad. So good and satisfying, but nice for hot weather. You can add in all sorts of veggies and use any kind of dressing you like or have on hand. Sending cool thoughts your way!

  7. It kills me to turn on the stove when it's 90 here. We have had hot all spring and summer so far. Getting ready to have 7 days worth of 90+. We run our ceiling fans continuously, and since I have 2 boys they wear very little clothing. We also take more baths... that always cools us off.

    1. Our fans are a constant as well! And I couldn't keep clothes on the little ones if I tried. My girls dress in swimsuits in the morning!
