Baby of Mine

"Baby mine, don't you cry.
 Baby mine, dry your eyes.
Rest your head close to my heart,
never to part,
baby of mine.

From your head down to your toes,

You're not much, goodness knows.
But you're so precious to me,
Sweet as can be,
Baby of mine."

It has become somewhat of a tradition of ours to give a little one a doll when a new baby is on the way.  As play is really the work of learning for small children, giving them toys that encourage life-play is an integral part on their learning about the world around them.  Just as play kitchens and dress up help them to act out and work through what they have noticed about life, doll play gives them the opportunity to learn about the relationships between babies and bigger people.

The gift of a baby doll helps ease the transition from baby of the family to proud big brother or sister. My sweet boy is already an admirer of babies we come in contact with, and I can't wait for him to have his very own to nurture and love.  In our family, we believe the roles of Mama and Daddy hold equal importance in the life of a baby, and therefore the gift of a baby doll is appropriate for a child of either gender.

It took a few hours one evening for me to piece together Peter's very own baby doll, now wrapped up and waiting for him to discover on Christmas morning.  This would be the fifth waldorf-inspired doll I've made, and it really is true that they come together easier and more quickly the more you make.  I used this kit available through a local company, Weir Dolls and Crafts.  I will definitely be making more in the future.

How are your homemade gifts coming along?

  1. Are you going to sell them in an etsy store> I would purchase one or two.

  2. Such a lovely doll. I agree with you on the doll for either gender, my little man received one last year for Christmas. A few people thought it strange until I explained why, then it made them think...I liked that :)

And that song, played it a lot when my little man was a baby, love it!
