These Days...{Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real}

It's Thursday!  Time for weekly {Pretty,Happy,Funny, Real}

{Pretty}

On Tuesday night, I slipped off to the fabric store after dinner and came home with some fabric to make skirts for the girls' upcoming birthdays.  We are celebrating a bit early this year, since our 3 birthday spread would take us right up to Easter and, of course, my due date.  For that reason, I wanted to get all things birthday squared away and ready.  I made these yesterday and just love how they turned out.  If I have a bit more time, I'll make a matching one for baby sister.  So much twirly swirly goodness!

{Happy}

Speaking of baby, we're all getting very excited to meet her.  Each day passes and brings us just a bit closer.  The littles sing songs to her, talk to her, and wake me each morning with lots of belly rubs and kisses.  So much love, even before she makes her big entrance!  A few weeks back, my oldest asked me if I thought we'd have any more babies.  I gave him a stuttering reply and then asked why he asked.  Here I must admit that sometimes I think having a large family is particularly tough on the oldest kids - they deal with the exasperation of many young siblings on a daily basis.  His response touched my heart: "I think you should have more.  I want more brothers to sword fight with.  Also, when you are done, you should adopt some, too."  Yes, from the oldest to the youngest, we are a family that loves children.  I couldn't be more proud of that kid.

{Funny}

I am suddenly on a big protein kick.  Jason's coworker has been selling her farm-fresh eggs for $2/doz, which is an excellent price in these parts.  I cannot get enough.  Jason has actually told me to save some for him - because he knows I could gobble an entire dozen on my own, so delicious are these.  Perhaps someday we will have chickens of our own, but since we rent and I haven't been able to get my head around keeping even more little mouths fed, for now we will just buy from others.

{Real}

We've been sick all week.  At first, I thought if we just skipped co op, or took a day or two off homeschooling, that we'd be able to salvage the rest of the week.  It quickly became apparent that that was not going to happen.  As soon as I made peace with the fact that we just plain needed an entire week off, I was able to relax and enjoy that time a bit more.  The kids have kept themselves busy with reading, watching movies, playing hide n seek and building great duplo towers with Peter.  I've been quietly getting those spring cleaning/baby prep jobs done like cleaning out cupboards and organizing diapers.  It's been nice to have a few days of school-less life, even if we all are a bit under the weather.

  1. I love those skirts! I would love to make some for all of the girls (including me) in our family. Did you find the pattern online? If so, could you please post the link? Where you are a spring baby family, we are a summer birthday family! I have May, June, and September birthday babies!

    1. Hi Hilary! I used the tutorial here. It was pretty intuitive, but good to be able to check and make sure I was doing it right! http://www.rileyblakedesigns.com/blog/2013/01/22/project-design-team-wednesdayeasy-tiered-skirt/

    1. These will be pretty full. Lately my youngest daughter is very into crinolines and "poofy" skirts. Hopefully this will work for her!

  3. Cute skirts! I just made Mouse her first skirt and discovered that she is so skinny I'm going to have to put straps on it to make it stay up! We've had an up and down week here too, more interruptions to the regular schedule than I had planned- but that's how it goes sometimes. Sorry to hear you all are under the weather...K

  4. Love love love the skirts. Especially the fabrics. I think I want some of these for myself.

    Best wishes for a round of happy birthdays and an easy delivery. I am sure you are very excited.

    Some days I wish I had more children to fill up my house, since I never had more, I invite the girls friends over regularly.

    Hope everyone is feeling better and you have some smooth sailing ahead. Kudos to you for planning ahead.

  6. Oh that belly picture.... you are making me want more! LOL! I have 8 blessings. my oldest is 18 now and while sometimes it is harder for them, they are the guinea pigs you know, they do love it. I watch her with my younger ones and I am so overcome with what a wonderful mother she will be because of this experience. I, too, am amazed when my kids demand more siblings. I look around our tiny house, bursting at the seams. I worry about money and clothes and groceries. Yet, they could care less. They just want more beautiful souls to love.

    A month or so ago, my 9 year old son was in CCD and they did a worksheet on prayer. His one prayer was for another baby. I laughed when I saw it and then I saw how I had hurt his feelings with my spontaneous giggle. It really put me in my place and reminded me that it is not my will, but Our Lord's!

  7. We have been buying farm eggs too and wow there is a big difference. I am not ready for chickens, being semi retired my goal is downsizing not picking up more 'things to take care of'...with a dog and cat too. BUT the farm eggs are so good.
    Hoping for you a good delivery and expecting to see pictures of the new little one in the next few weeks.

    1. That's what I am missing - the daily jaunt out to gather eggs! Though I think we'd need quite a few chickens to make enough for our brood!

  9. Your skirt is lovely, your girls are going to look adorable. Did you grow up learning to knit/sew or was it something you developed an interest in later? - you are amazingly talented.
    We used to have chickens, but here in Europe a few years ago we had 'bird flu' from migrating birds so lots of restrictions were put on 'domestic' chicken keeping, which meant we had to kill ours. They were a lot of work but so worth it, not just the eggs but the company, they were so nice to have tottering around the place. I think we should get some more but hubby says no?
    Hope you all get well soon. Take care.

    1. I took a basic sewing class as a kid and my Grandma showed me how to knit and purl, but it wasn't until the past few years that I really got back into it. Still a lot to learn!! I really do hope to have chickens someday, but for now the excuses not to are kind of nice - one less thing to think about!

  10. I have so enjoyed looking at your knitted and sewn lovelies! I'm glad you were able to salvage the yarn for the Age of Brass and Steam shawl. I know how hard it is to have to rip out, start over, etc. Good job for pressing on! :)

  13. My eldest is also the biggest cheerleader for more kids. As she gets older she appreciates the wonder of babies and the pride she takes in being able to help care for them. So sweet to see our littles getting bigger in this way.

    Sometimes a little space is all we need to catch up on the little jobs and slow things down while we get over beig sick. Hopefully the rest has done wonders in your parts.
