Surviving the Cold(s)

-1 degrees with a windchill of -22. If I could pick a day to be inside with a bunch of sick kids, this would be it. Really, there's nothing much else to do anyway. It's just plain too cold. Cuddling and managing fevers and coughs seems like enough activity for the day. So we pull out the couch and make a bed right in the living room, and wear pajamas all day. Here are a few little things that are making it extra cozy today.

~Oatmeal for breakfast. I jazzed mine up with

~Homemade applesauce. I never got around to making it this fall, but that's alright because this crockpot recipe came together impossibly quick yesterday afternoon and made the whole house smell lovely. (I used about 1/8 cup sugar).

~Picture books. My little people are piled high on my lap and just want me to keep reading so I am. Here are a few of today's picks:

Soup. Chicken with rice today for lunch, warm and perfect for sniffly people.

Knex. Poured out on the living room floor, keeping everyone busy.

Natural Cough Syrup. I don't typically do cough syrups at all, but last night we thought we'd whip some of this up and give it a try. I'm not sure it works, but it does no harm and doesn't taste half bad either.

Here's to staying warm and (hopefully) sane on this cold, cold day.

  1. i've got a bunch of sickies, too. and it's ten degrees here in NC, which is unheard of. your cough syrup looks much better-tasting than mine-- raw honey, minced garlic, cinnamon, turmeric, and cayenne.

  2. It's freezing here too. And the small country house we moved too in the summer looses just a bit of it's charm with the wind whipping through now. I super enjoy your blog, by the way. Stay warm! :)

  4. Building Our House is a favorite! I actually bought it for my Dad last Christmas since they did something similar when I was five and my brother was three. Just brings the late seventies/early eighties right to mind!
