Handmade Christmas

I know it may seem silly to write about Christmas in July, but if you are planning a handmade Christmas, you may want to get started, at least with the planning stage.  I'm hoping to mostly make the gifts for my children this year and possibly the others I usually shop for, if I have time.  Here is my planning list:

Little J (20 months at Christmas):
Soft baby Waldorf Doll
Wallaby Sweater
Mittens

F (3):
Sweater (finished)
16 inch Waldorf Doll
Doll sweater (in progress), longies, shoes and hat
Doll Dress
Mittens for F
Nightgown

D (5):
Sweater (finished)
16 inch Waldorf Doll
Doll sweater, longies, shoes and hat
Doll dress
Mittens for D
Nightgown

B (7):
Wallaby Sweater
Mittens
Hat
Pajama pants

Big J:
Sweater
Mittens
Hat

As you can see, that is a pretty big list!  Lots of knitting and a bit of sewing in there as well.  This is my ideal list, but as we get closer (and more busy during the school year!) some of my ideas are sure to drop off.  The good news is, at least with the doll knitting, I have most of the supplies I need to get started.   The wool for the boy's sweaters has been ordered and should arrive in August. Today I discovered that one of my favorite sources for Waldorf Doll materials actually has a store front in Ann Arbor!  I will definitely be stopping by there to pick up some supplies (sans $10 shipping, hooray!).

In addition to all of this, I'm also working on things for my first ever nephew!  I plan on making him a pair of sweet little quick change pants featured in "Handmade Beginnings" to go with a sweater I am almost finished with.  I'd love to make him a soft little Waldorf baby, too, but I don't think I'll have the time this year - probably for his first birthday though!

Tell me - are you planning on making anything for Christmas this year?  What are your plans?

Happy Creating, everyone!

  1. I wrote a whole long comment and it got deleted. Basically, thanks for kicking butt ing ear to make my christmas list. My parents want to do a homemade christmas as well. I am doing sweaters for each birthday child instead of all at Christmas. But I am going to hopefully tackle a knitted baby doll for Ruby this Christmas!

  2. Have you tried making a star child (Living Crafts Issue Winter 2010) for a young child? I have made a few for baby showers and they were total hits. They also take only a fraction of the time of a full waldorf doll.

I love the idea of a handmade Christmas. I may try to do at least mostly handmade.

  3. Sounds great, Sara! I hope you keep me updated on your progress! The only way I could do all the sweaters at Christmas was to start them in June, haha! Unfortunately starting so early I think that Fiona's is going to be too small by Christmas, darnit! It may have to be a "back to school" sweater instead.
