In Threes

From the oldest, with his love of baseball, biking and learning to the youngest, cutting teeth and trying to take those first few steps and of course that strong and sensitive, loud and crazy one in the middle, I'm so enjoying being a Mama to three - boys, that is.

A nearly nine year old who comes to me with his serious questions and wonderings and still comes in for a kiss goodnight.  A three year old who never does anything small scale, who never walks when he could run, never talks when he could shout and never smiles when he could toss back his head and laugh.  A baby who just might be the most sweet-natured little person I've ever met.

I'm reminded of a comment a dear friend, Mama to many little girls, made when asked if she was going to have "another girl."  She said "oh no, not another one; a different one."

Yes, these three are really something. At each different stage, in every shape, size and temperament, it's a joy to be called "Mom" by such wonderful people.

  2. I'm also a momma to 3 children with similar ages (10, 3, 6 months) and it takes a lot of quick thinking to handle each one of their unique personalities. My favorite time of the day is when my older boys get to spend time with their baby sister. She just adores them and they get such a kick out of making her laugh. It will be interesting to see if she'll be a "girly girl" or just one of the boys :)

    1. You are right, it does take a lot of quick thinking and a lot of studying their specific personalities to keep up. I love seeing sibling relationships emerge like the one you mentioned with your daughter and boys. We have 3 boys and 2 girls and each one of them have very unique relationships with every sibling. I love seeing older children loving the babies too - it's a wonderful thing!

  3. I love how your friend answered that question about another girl - they are all different.

I only have one little one, a boy, and I love him to bits. And hearing me call me mama, well, you know...totally amazing!

  4. This is so sweet, my son and his wife have three sons and my daughter has three daughters, there were three girls in my family growing up so I really like 'three's'.

  5. Boys are so perplexing to me. I only have sisters myself and all of my littler cousins are girls too. I have never seen a boy grow up except my own.
I have one little two-year-old boy who I just watch in astonishment all the time. His ferocity is incredible! Even his affection is ferocious!
I recently gave birth (5 weeks ago) to my second son, and I was astonished at him also from the moment I set eyes on him and realised the Lord had blessed us with another son! These foreign little men who, along with my husband, have now outnumbered my daughter (4) and I.
I had to seek out a dear friend with three almost-grown boys to make her tell me every wonderful thing she knows about being a mother to boys. She was very encouraging. :)
I know I won't need any help loving my boys- that bit's easy- but understanding them may come a bit more slowly I think!

    1. Oh Lauren, I understand! I have 3 brothers of my own, all very different boys growing up and wonderfully unique adult men now! But I must say, while I recognize a lot of the behavior from the boys I grew up with, I'm not sure I'll ever fully understand it. Boys are truly amazing complex creatures! So blessed to have my three!
