Birthday Yarn and Baptisms {Yarn Along}

These last 3 weeks have been a complete blur.  Rosemary is what I consider to be a high needs baby - which really just mean she wants to be with her Mama all the time.  Which, of course, makes a lot of sense, given she was on the inside just 3 short weeks ago!  Still, it's been an adjustment for me - my last few babies have been so incredibly easy as newborns.  This weekend we are having her baptism and will have some family in town.  My normal preparing for company rituals have been completely derailed according to her needs and wants - that is to say, the house is a disaster, the laundry piled up, no time to make meals ahead and no idea how I am going to pull this off.  At this point I am realizing that it is time for me to put humility to the test and truly just let it be and hope that I'll be given the grace I need to get through the remainder of the week.

As a result, knitting has of course been on the back burner...except that I can sometimes knit a few rows when Rosemary sleeps on my chest in the evenings.  I cast on for this Rio dress in a size 6 month with some yarn I got for my birthday (knitpicks swish tonal, fingering weight).  I keep checking my gauge because the dress seems tiny, but it's right on.  I'm hoping it blocks a little larger, but I guess we'll see.  Please forgive the photos, it's rainy and overcast today - no good light to be found!  Because this dress is knit in fingering weight, it moves quite a bit slower than other things...but I guess that is the pace of life for right now.  Slowly.

As for reading, I haven't read anything for myself, including the book I was making my way through.  I have been reading aloud to the kids, the second book in the Indian in the Cupboard series, "Return of the Indian," and one of the sequels to Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, "Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's Magic."  Read alouds are mostly all I can manage with them these days, with Rosie sleeping in my arms and the rest of them gathered all around. Reminding myself daily, minute by minute, that this is enough for now.

  1. What a precious post. With my youngest being now "going on 13" I can attest to how quickly the time flies by. Enjoy the slow pace! Read alouds are a fabulous way to get your reading in. :) And the Rio is going to be gorgeous!

  3. LOVE the yarn!! Here is my order of importance: 1) the baby and kids (of course) 2) the knitting and then 3) the housework. You just need to flip the housework and knitting and all will be well. Hope you carve yourself some knitting time. You can always daydream for free!!

  7. Olive was a high needs baby too. Hugs, it can feel overwhelming and discouraging but I have never regretted halting life to care for her.

  9. My 6th, my daughter Lila, was and is what I would also consider a high needs baby. She will be 1 1/2 in May. I always had her on me either in a sling or in my arms. And at times I still do. It does feel overwhelming at times. Especially when it comes to schooling with the older ones. You are doing an amazing job and read alouds are more than enough right now! You are a wonderful mom and this season of life is a short one. Soon you will be on to another amazing season with baby Rosemary as well as all of your other littles. I know you will savor every moment with each one. At the same time give yourself a little grace and understanding. No one will care if your house is a little cluttered or messy, or if you feel all you can manage for the day is to read aloud a wonderful book to your children. With God's grace and strength you will make it through.
