At Home In Fall

I think I may be the only person who loves daylight savings time. While my facebook feed fills with the frustrations of other Mamas at children waking too early, messed up naps and the general mayhem time changes bring, I keep quiet.

I like the pattern of fall and the deepness of the evenings when the sky darkens at 5 pm. I like how the evenings feel more definitively set apart from the day time, how we cocoon ourselves in our little warm house with lamps ablaze, turning inward for those last few hours as just our own family unit. Don't get me wrong, I love endless summer days as much as the next person, backyard baseball games going well past dinner time with neighbor kids dashing around with my kids. But the early twilight and communal feel of all of us grouped closely together is my very favorite.

Dinner is usually waiting on the table when Dad gets home, two benches full of kids wiggling anxiously in anticipation. The kids are in bed earlier these days, after dinner chores and read alouds and the obligatory wrestling match on the living room rug. There's a neatness to this, 6 kids snug upstairs in our little home. Perhaps that what I like about this time of year most of all. The definitive rhythm to each day, set by the sun, feels so natural and right.

As I slowly begin to feel better, the space of these nights will be filled again with creativity, projects I've been mentally compiling for months finally come to be. For now, I just sit with the richness of it all. Velvety darkness, deep quiet. Our home in Fall, my very favorite place to be.
