A Good Day

We bundled up and headed to our favorite tree stand on Saturday, and while my kids darted in and out of the rows of trees, yelling to each other, I took it all in. Each year it seems we either have a new baby to show off to our favorite tree farmer or I've got someone growing in the quiet dark space, buttoned under my jacket. He's known me since I was the size of one of my little ones. This year he handed out 6 candy canes to my six red cheeked babies and tied our tree securely to the top of our 12 passenger van.

We brought it home, our smallest tree yet, to the small space I was able to find in a house that seems packed full of people. It didn't take long for the kids to decorate it as they do, some spaces crowded in ornaments and others glaringly bare. They chattered and skipped around and critically surveyed their work and Dinah said "Today is a great day."

It blesses me to no end to watch these kids of mine in our own space while the world swirls on the outside. When my fears of not giving them enough or not being enough for are shushed by observing how they embrace their lives unquestioningly, graciously, thankfully. They teach me so much about contentment and joy. They show me what matters most and continually point me back to the source of every good and perfect gift.

I'll never be enough, but the ultimate gift of Jesus is all any of us needs. And when I put my kids to bed and look around this little place after they are all asleep, I can see all the ways He loves us.
