DIY Mother's Day
My husband works on Sundays and my kids are still little, so I really have little to no expectations for Mother's Day. Despite my best efforts, this was making me a bit blue in the "poor me, I never get a special day" type of way (yes, I have those feelings from time to time...). Then I had an idea - who said I can't have a Mother's Day? Even if no one else is interested, can I celebrate...me? A pretty narcissistic idea, I realize, but I couldn't shake the thought - is it so wrong to do something nice for your very own self? I quickly realized that saying "Its my special day" and laying around doing nothing would only result in one thing - a disaster and a grouchy mom. No, if I was going to have a special day, I would have to DO something about it. I mentally made a list - what do I want for Mother's day?
A clean(ish) house
Flowers everywhere
"Happy Mother's Day" written on my chalkboard
Freshly made bed
Hanging baskets on the back porch and Marigolds in my boxes on the deck
Coffee first thing in the morning.
And with that list in mind, I set to work. First cleaning, then cutting flowers and bringing them in and setting them all over the house. Getting out my Mother and baby figurine and setting her front and center. Doing laundry, putting everything away, making up my bed, cleaning up my room. I packed up the kids and went to the store for flower baskets and marigolds (we did stop and get my mom a little something, I'm a good daughter!). I heavily hinted to my son that I wanted him to write on the chalkboard and he finally got the hint! I'm planning on setting the coffee maker on a timer to start in the morning so its all ready.
All in all, the makings of a pretty darn good Mother's Day if I do say so myself.
Happy Mother's Day to all the Mamas out there, but especially the ones that are knee deep in life and have no one acknowledging the sacrifice of love that they are making. Take a moment and celebrate yourself! You are doing a GREAT JOB!
