In The Inbetween

We're here in the in between - those last days and weeks between true Summer and the beginning of Fall.  It's a precarious place to be, one that sees me trying to soak up the last bit of summer goodness while balancing the Fall planning before things start in earnest.  A place where there is much to look forward to, but also much to hold onto, for just a little longer.

We're navigating new things here, placement tests for our new curriculum that have some of the kids worried and Mama a bit on edge, too.  Coming from a place where Mama knows the child and can identify why mistakes were made where, it feels a bit daunting to send tests off to people who don't know us and will evaluate us based on a few short answers.  At the same time, I am thankful we are doing this, thankful for the opportunity of an outside insight into how we are learning and what may need some work.  It is all a process for me, one of letting go a bit here and there but trusting that the prayers that led us here were not in vain.

I'm looking forward to a time when the upheaval of season and rhythm changes are behind us and we can settle right in to those gentle, shorter days.  I'm dreaming of Christmas creating and making lists of patterns and yarns and yes, even some dollmaking supplies, seeing in my mind's eye those lovely homeschool days with a pile of yarn in my lap while listening to lessons with my little ones.  (If you must know, I am dreaming of 5 of these for 5 little Will children, wrapped up beneath the tree.)

Yes, change is in the wind and I can feel it.  So we plan to pack up for one last trip lakeside, soaking up those last few summer rays before the leaves start their downward spiral.  And all I can feel is gratitude, right deep inside, for this summer, this life, these people and, yes, these changes.  Life just a trickling stream, moving us on just a bit each day.
