This Week {Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real}

{Pretty}

Fiona was gifted a new dress by a sweet friend from our homeschool co op.  It's technically a sun dress, but works just fine over a long sleeved tee for wintertime, so she tells me.  I cannot get enough of Laura Ashley and can't stop snapping pictures of my sweet girl in her new (to us) hand me down dress.

{Happy}

I knit this little sweater for Jonah a few years back, and sadly he wore it maybe a whopping 2 times before it was a) too warm and b) he was too big!  So I stashed it away for Peter to grow into.  I'm glad I remembered and dug it out, because it has become a staple in his wardrobe, largely replacing a coat when riding in the car for safety reasons (no coats in car seats!).  Due to the softness of the yarn, a few of the button holders popped, giving in to his toddler tugging.  I think I'll reinforce them with a needle and thread instead of soft, easily broken yarn.  Still, I can't get over how cute he is in it.

{Funny}

My boys discovered a revived interest in all things swordplay.  They have been leaping off of bunkbeds, shouting "En garde!" and "Aha!" while thrusting their (blessedly foam) swords at one another and making plans for full scale battles once the weather warms up.  Even Peter gets in on it, shouting and running and swashbuckling with the older two.  I shake my head and remember my brothers doing the exact same thing - and really enjoying having 3 boys in the house!  I took the opportunity for a rare Amazon Prime rental of Robin Hood to further inspire them.  And although now my house is suddenly transformed into an Errol Flynn action flick, I wouldn't have it any other way.

{Real}

Since I've been doing weekly meal planning and grocery shopping, I've been amazed at just how much our not so little family eats.  Being more intentional about avoiding mid week shopping has really required me to take a long hard look at what (and how much!) we eat.  I have to admit, the first time I placed 3 gallons of milk in my cart, I was a bit dubious that we would make it through them all, but of course we did!  Last week, my beautiful brood ate 10 pounds of oranges, 3 bunches of bananas and 3 lbs of apples.  And we ran out of fruit before my next grocery trip.  Still, I am loving this meal planning...even when it gets me dumbfounded looks in the check out line!

That's what is going on this week.  I really am loving this exercise in weekly contentment.  It really helps me focus in on how wonderful things truly are!

  2. Beautiful children! My girls also love to wear their summer dresses over long sleeve shirts and trousers. I quite like the look, I must say.

  3. Wow! That sweater is beautiful! I'm so impressed at your skills. I hope someday to get there.
    I can understand the surprise at what your family goes through in a week, food-wise. Sometimes, when I'm carrying my heavy bags of groceries up the stairs on my arms and leaning on my back, I'm struck that all this weight that I'm carrying will be consumed by the two of us (well, three counting baby on the way) in just one week! I mean, to be fair, a lot of the weight comes from the glass jars, or a big bag of flour that is not going to disappear in one week... still - I'm amazed at what it takes to keep us fed. And we don't even have the kids along yet!

    1. It is so true. Kind of a striking thought, that we consume so much. It also shows me how much of a luxury a lot of what we buy really is. We are able to eat things we enjoy, that taste good, make yummy treats, etc.

    3. I posted about boy play today too, I see the boxing glove in the shot!

    1. Isn't that something? We always run out of something...and not every week is the same. Sometimes it's eggs, so I buy an extra dozen the next week, just to not eat them all!! Sigh. Always on your toes, feeding a crew like that. Thank you for stopping by!

  5. I love your homemade sweaters. A friend of mine made me a 'hand knitted' one and I cherish it, she worked really hard since I picked the curly yarn and she did an awesome job.

  6. I only shop once a week (with a meal plan) and am amazed at what a family of 4 get through!
    Your little girl looks adorable in her dress and boots.
    I made my boys wooden swords (with a little help from the carpenter down the road) last week, and they have been in constant use since, and thankfully with very few accidents!!

    1. We have some wooden swords, but out of fear for my littlest guy, I declared them "outside-only" toys. My boys can't wait for Spring to get out there and really battle!

  7. Your little one looks so happy with her dress, and that sweater is great. Reece has one just for the car too :) And food, is there ever enough, mind you I am only feeding three mouths, I can't imagine what feeding your family looks like :)

  8. absolutely love the sweater! I don't suppose you are one of those super organized persons who remember exactly what pattern you used?? I have 3 boys in the house so far too and am thinking our own gymnasium wouldn't be a bad idea:)

    1. A gymnasium sounds amazing. I have a friend with a large family (and several boys) and in the winter, they turn their pole barn into a gymnasium. Genius! Also, the sweater pattern is Bulle over on ravelry.
